Apple continues to make money with iPods

Apple reported this morning the results of its first quarter for 2009. The company, which has been make headlines for several years with its line of iPod and iPhone devices, is still making money — and lots of it.

Making money for Apple is not a surprise. But considering the dire straits of the economy in the last quarters, the fact that Apple is beating estimates for growth is a very glad occurrence.

According to the official report, Apple was able to grow about 25% compared to previous year, which is a fantastic rate of growth — even on normal economic times. If we consider the effects of the recession on consumers, the increase in demand for Apple’s products demonstrate the strengh of their business.

The strengh is apparent, also, from the public image of the company in media. The Apple-gui commercials are still a great success, and have largely changed the view of personal computers, especially for the younger generation.

And with new products being announced practically every semester, Apple has showed that there is much more growth where this was created. If we see an improvement in the economy by the end of the year, Apple will be positioned to benefit greatly of such economic recovery.

Apple versus PC: a comparison

If you are a Mac fan you already know how better the Macs are compared to similar PCs. What many people think, however, is that this is just an exaggeration by Apple users.

In the past it was difficult to do any direct comparisons between Macs and PC, mainly because the processors used were so different. People always complained about comparisons that would show processors with the same speed, and not accounting for the differences in architecture between PCs and Macs.

Now that Apple has moved to use Intel processors on its whole line, it has become much easier to draw more meaningful comparisons. And they are starting to appear. For example, see this one from popular mechanics:

After matching two pairs of Macs and PCs, they reached the not-so-difficul-to-draw conclusion that Macs are much faster to start up and shut down, and perform much better in a set of stardard tasks.

Moreover, their tests show that Apple machines run Windows faster then similar PCs.

Still, this is not the ultimate test that is going to convince the hard-core PC followers. However, it shows that is becomming easier to make this kind of comparison, and the reality will eventually become clearer for everyone.

Making you old mac run a little faster

Macs are fantastic machines, but sometimes they also have their performance problems. I have my Mac running well for years, day and night, and it has been pretty capable to handle the load.

There are times, however, when you want to improve the performance of you system. If that is the case, it is interesting to check possible areas where you could get extra performance of your old Mac box.

I have a handy list of things to look for in my Mac from time to time. I run through this list to make sure that I get the best performance of my machine, and that Mac OS X keeps running fine. Here are some of my tips:

Take notice of the programs you are installing in the background. Mac OS X is highly reliable, but there are some programs that keep running in the background, and therefore take resources that should be made available to other programs. For example, I used to have small Java-based utilities installed. They can be very nice, but also take their toll from you processor. Nowadays, I prefer to remove any background program that is not doing anything used in my system.
Install latest updates. This is hard not to do, but am lazy enough to dismiss the Mac OS X update screen when it pops up. Of course, it will be there the next day, so it is better to do updates the first time they come.
Avoid multiple programs to do the same thing: I used to have multiple IM programs (now I mostly use Adium. Also, I used to have multiple browsers opened at the same time (Firefox, Safari, and Opera are my preferred). Now, I decided to use only Safari as my main browser. This both simplifies my life and uses less resources of my machine.

In summary, I am pretty happy with the speed and great performance of my Mac. However, I learned with time to make better use of the system resources, so I don't have to wait more than I really want to. This way, I can also spend more time with the programs that I like, such as iTunes, iDVD...

Google cooperates with Apple on more than the iPhone

Apple and Google plan to collaborate even more - that is the message from Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, to the crowed that came to preview some of the Google's innovations during a French event.
According to Google's CEO, the cooperation just started with the integration of Youtube into Apple's products, such as AppleTV and the iPhone. Scchmidt, who was demoing a very exclusive Apple iPhone, told the crowd that other collaborations where on the way, and that the Google-Apple combination would deliver notable technologies in the near future.
It will be very interesting to watch what these collaborative features would be. In fact, joining the network power of Google with the hardware and software excellence of Apple would result in pretty impressive products. Let us hope that this collaboration really works in the long run and that users can benefit from it.

Amid the large excitement about the launch of the iPhone next week, Apple is delievering a few more pieces of information on its web site.
The new information shows additional images of the cell phone, along with improved videos showing its functionality.
As was publicized yesterday, the iPhone will have direct access to iTube videos, which will make it even more attractive for web surfers that are used to view the newest videos on their computers.
There are still very few confirmed facts about the launch of the iPhone, except the release date. The media is busy trying to get additional information from Apple, and it will be interesting to watch what is gonna happen in the next few days.

Youtube and iPhone: a great combination

The Youtube success has generated a lot of press in the last months. Nowadays, Youtube is a force in several areas of online collaboration, going from marketing campaigns to even politics.
Apple also wants to take part of the Youtube scene. First, they decided to integrate Youtube with the AppleTV, in a new try to conquer the living room.
The latest news on the attempt of integration with Youtube has been released this morning. Apple is saying that they will integrate Youtube with the iPhone.
This shows at least two things
Apple is in great relationship with Google. And this looks great for both companies, since they have offers that complement each other (despite the small areas in which they have overlapping strategies)
The Youtube phenomenon can probably move to the mobile phone, where it can get even more viral. The iPhone can well be the platform that will allow even more widespread distribution of small videos created by the Youtube users.
So this seems great for everyone involved, and probably users and investors will take notice.

The iPhone has numerous features that set it apart from the competition. The great user interface has made people to think that it is the most technologically advanced phone on the market.
However, nothing of this matters if it is not usable from the start. That is why it is important, in these initial days, to verify how usable is the iPhone user interface.
The main element of this interface is clearly the keyboard. Other cell phones have integrated keyboards that can be used very predictively. The iPhone, however, has not fixed keyboard. Who guarantees that users will be able to learn how to use the keyboard?

A virus for the Apple Mac?

Today, news have come out that a hacker was able to explore a bug in the Apple OS kernel (known by the name of Darwin). It has been one of the few times I heard that a bug in Mac OS kernel was reported to be found and explored to create something similar to a virus or warm.

This can mean one of two things:

Apple is doing a worse job of creating new versions of its operating system; or
The mac is getting so much attention that crackers are starting to spend more time on it. As a result, we should expect viruses in the coming months...

I hope this can be, in fact, the result of a third option: the mac OS is not getting worse, and this was just another opportunity for the media to focus on bad news for Apple. What do you think?

Everybody is trying these days to make their web sites a little more interactive. Apple is not different, and they are just adding a new feature to their sales web site that can make it a little easier for customers who want to "make the change":

Apple had been running its "chat now" feature as an experiment in the educational store for some time, giving potential customers the option to chat with a live sales representative about various Apple products before purchasing and relieving those educational customers from making a blind decision.

Apple plans new iPhone with iChat mobile

The rumors of Apple developing a cell phone have become more credible each day. Some even say that this is the reason stock price of Apple has increased in the last trading sessions. A new voice is joining the chorus that says that the iPhone is closer than we think. Another analyst is saying that not only the iPhone will be released, but that Apple is already working in the next version, which will allow integration with the iChat, bringing a new level of connectivity for Apple customers.

According to Shaw Wu:

"Time to market is not certain to us as it appears to be in the development phase," Wu wrote in his Nov. 20 research paper. "We believe this product is [Apple's] 'smart phone' and could be branded as 'iChat mobile."

Apple and Coca-cola to partner in music deal

After Nike, Coca-cola is the new global brand that tries to use the iPod mania as a means to increase sales. According to the irishdev, it has been announced that Coca-cola will be working with Apple in Ireland and Europe to promote a collaboration around the iTunes music store.

The Coca-cola web site features a new section to the European community, called music.coca-cola.com. It will probably involve giving away songs from iTunes as a promotional campaign.

Apple iBook catches fire in Japan

Recently, Apple has announced that its is going to make an world wide recall of laptop batteries that are known to have some over heating problem. Maybe their time was good, because the problems started to appear.

In Japan, an incident with a PowerMac has lead to the local authorities requesting action from Apple. A laptop has been reported to catch fire due to overheating.

According to chron.com:

Japan's trade ministry ordered Apple's Japan branch to report on its findings and measures to prevent future troubles by Sept. 5 or it could face a fine of up to 300,000 yen ($2,570) under Japan's consumer safety laws.

Using the overheating MacBook as a toaster

Have you ever used you macbook for a few minutes over you lap, just to blame Steve Jobs an Apple for creating such a hot machine (in the wrong sense)! You are not alone. Many people have discovered that a MacBook can run very hot if you use some processor-intensive applications.

To prove this with a real-world experiment, some smart guys proposed to cook their own lunch using the MacBook. In this way, you can benefit from the overheating problem by reducing your light bill...
The instructions are show in a video, and in the following recipe:

1. Get a macbook and turn it over so the screens over the edge of your desk/counter (shown in picture)
2. Run your favorite process intensive program to get it to heat up
3. Some tinfoil on uper left part of the laptops underside (the hottest part of the macbook
4. Put your cup of coffee on the power supply to keep it warm
5. Cook your egg on the tinfoil, it will take longer than normal
6. Enjoy your breakfast
7. Now you know the secret of the overheating notebook

An ongoing discussion in the osx86project delves into the comparison of Mac OS X and the long waited version of Microsoft Windows: Windows Vista.

Most people in the thread believe that the main weakness of Vista as an operating system is exactly its inheritance. It has to provide even the same bugs that many preceding versions of Windows had. As one of the commentator said:

If Microsoft had a clue about operating systems, they would have thrown Windows out with the trash and started with a clean slate. Then they should have simply followed an OS X or NeXTSTEP-like architecture pattern. Specifically, they should have started with a well developed, secure Unix-like operating system, like a BSD, then bought something like BeOS for the GUI, and added some advanced Cocoa-like application development environment and perhaps a high performance kernel like maybe L4.

Comparison of Web browsers for Apple

A very nice article comparing the pros and cons of the major Web browsers for the Mac platform was produced by the guys at MacIntalk.

Among the conclusions, is that the browsers based on WebKit are much more efficient and standard compliant in some web pages than browsers based on Gecko.

This somewhat confirms my personal view of the issue. Firefox is great on Windows for lack of other options, but it still doesn't beat Safari on the Mac OS X. I just wished Safari had a decent implementation editable areas... Hopefully this will be released soon.

Running classic Mac OS 9 on Intel Mac

Maybe you don't remember it, but there are still people out there who love the classic Mac OS 9, the operating system that powered the Macs for a long time during the 90s. Although Mac OS X is the-way-to-go, Mac OS 9 has a distinctive look that makes a lot of people still like it.

So, it is not very surprising that someone decided to run the Classic OS 9 in one of the newest Mac Intel machines. It is something doable, but not easy to do, since Apple has no intention to support Mac OS 9 in its new line of machines.

The basic trick behind it is to use SheepShaver, a run time environment for programs written to the PowerPC processor. It is a free software, and it was created mainly to run mac programs in the Linux and Windows OSs. As we see, with a little hacking, you can make anything working on anything else...

The iPod hallo seems to be working

After years of being nothing more than speculation of industry analysts, the so-called "iPod halo effect" seems to be working for Apple. In the first quarter of the year, it seams that a large number of Apple computers have been sold -- much more than in the previous years, in percentage terms.

This may be a signal that Apple is finally becoming a major seller of computer, after years of shrinking revenue. I hope the best years of Apple are still to come...

Apple can redesign iPod nano to avoid scratches

While we approach the season of new announcements by Apple, forecasters start to get busy at work. According to MacObserver, the new rumor is that the iPods will now come with a better case, made of magnesium, which will be much more protective and avoid scratches all over the iPod.

According to the article:

American Technology Research Analyst, Shaw Wu, thinks the next generation iPod nano is likely to have a magnesium-based metal case instead of the polycarbonate version used in current models. While some analysts are speculating that a redesigned nano will be announced in July or August, Mr. Wu thinks that problems in converting to a system on a chip (SOC) architecture are slowing the process down.

Apple removes eMac from its line

After years as the low-priced version of macs, the eMac is finally retiring.

For some time, the eMac has only been used by schools, which want to buy cheap models to serve hundreds of students. Now, Apple is introducing a new version of the iMac target to schools at the low price of $899.00.

With this, there is no real need for the old eMac, since everything it did can now be done with the iMac, for the same price.

Moreover, Apple will not be required to change the processors of the eMac, in order to transition completely into the Intel world.

Playing with the Apple PowerMac backlight

An article in arstechnica.com teaches how to use the backlight of the keyboard in the powerbook as a CPU load monitor. The code is simple, and you try to have some fun with your mac.

According to the page:

It took some trial and error to get the numbers from the CPU usage to correspond properly with the number needed to set the brightness of the backlight. What I did find is that the function host_processor_info is not granular enough to give accurate readings under a second. My keyboard was flashing when the update time was 0.1 seconds. I might try to look to see if there is a better what to get the numbers I want.

I also want to make the brightness fade instead of jump like the program does now. It should be relatively easy to do: Amit showed how in Figure 6 of his article. I want to tinker with the range of the brightness of the keyboard as well, to make it a little more obvious. Another idea I had was to change how bright the min and max were depending on the readings of the Ambient Light Sensors: brighter during high light levels, and lower during less.

Best buy test for selling Apple computers

Best Buy, one of the largest computer retail stores in the country, has confirmed that they are doing tests in a few stores with Apple computers. The program is being watched closely by both Apple and Best Buy.

Apple computers are at the moment sold mainly on Apple own stores. The major issue at Apple is to require a high level of customer support from Best Buys employees. They want to guarantee that customer will have a level of service similar to service at Apple stores.

Such a move would be very good for Apple, since Best Buy is the largest showcase of technology products in the country. Selling the Mac on Best Buy would certainly increase awareness of the company computers among more traditional buyers.

Apple to offer movie downloads

It is still not confirmed, but most news sites are talking about the possibility of Apple providing movie downloads through their iTunes store. Apparently, Apple is in talk with several major Hollywood studies in order to cut a deal that would allow them to distribute movies using this distribution channel.

Although it is not clear if this is will happen not, it seams cleat that this is the next logical step for the iTunes service. Starting from the offer of music files, iTunes has grown to one of the most popular Internet based music systems. Similar success has happened with short videos, which was made possible by the introduction of the new iPod video.

What makes me wonder: would this new interest in Hollywood movies have been spurred by new capabilities of the iPod player? It is well possible that Steve Jobs is preparing a major upgrade, maybe with larger screen and better control system, and wants to make this available with the ultimate content for video players: access to the latest blockbusters. Maybe we will know sooner than we think.

Google releases new SketchUp: a new second life?

A few weeks ago, Google announced it was buying a small company called @Last Software. The main product of this company, a 3D modeler system called SketchUp, is now being released to the public by Google.

SketchUp allow users to create powerful 3D models for designing or just recreative purposes. It allows the composition of 3D models from simple primitives. And the more interesting feature is: you can upload 3D models to Google earth, and allow others to visualize your creation.

In a sense, Google earth is getting a little closer to what games such as second life already do: creating virtual worlds, and allowing people to visit your creations instantaneously.

Multiple boot option in an Apple MacIntosh

If you have a new Intel Mac, you probably think that installing other operating systems is a great possibility. Using the x86 architecture has allowed Apple Macs to run other operating systems that where not possible with PowerPC processors. Among them are Linux and Windows, but since Linux was available anyway by the use of specialized distributions, installing windows is one of the main attraction of the Intel based Macs.

With the introduction of BootCamp, Apple is trying to make easier the life of the people that really want to run Windows software. Bootcamp is a simple software, but it takes important steps during the boot process. It need to determine what types of operating systems you have available, where they are installed, and how to perform the initialization sequence for each OS.

Learning the options available for BootCamp may be overwhelming if you don't have any previous knowledge in multi-boot systems (such as the ones available for Linux). To make user's life a little easier, some guys have created a nice wiki web page. There you can find detailed information, along with some tips that are not available in the official documentation from Apple.

Running Windows in a Mac may not be the thing to do, but it is fun anyway, and it just shows how much many things are possible with the new macs. It is time to give a try to book camp, and see for yourself if it fits your needs or not.

Aperture: New photography software from Apple

If you work with photography and wants to achieve professional results with a normal equipment, you should consider Aperture. Aperture is a new software from Apple that allows photographers (professional or not) to take full control of their creations.

By allowing access to the original formats of the pictures (instead of working only with jpeg or related formats), Aperture gives full control of features such as color, luminescence, focus, and other features that can be modified by software.

Aperture offers everything that professional photography packages provide, but it is very easy to use, in the full tradition of Apple Macintosh software. It also sell for much less than normal packages for photography, so I think that Aperture is a gift from Apple to the photography community. It is an essential part of the "tools of the trade".

Color picker application for Mac OS X

Color picking is a function frequently needed by web designers and people working with graphical software in general.

Instead of spending money and time installing any additional software to do this, consider using the color picker embedded in the Mac OS X. It is flexible and allow you to use a full range of features, that would otherwise only be available in especialised software.

A good way to use the color picker as a separate application is described by Mac OS X hints:

Simply fire up AppleScript (Applications -> AppleScript Editor) and enter this text:
choose color
Now, save it as an application (File -> Save As, and set the File Format pop-up to Application), and you're done! I copied the icon from the Digital Color Meter onto it to pretty it up. Add in the free HEXColorPicker from Lucky Software, and you've got everything a web developer might need to pick colors in any app.

A comparison of browsers for Mac OS X

A recent article by Apple links provides a nice review of the major web browsers available for the Apple Mac OS X platform. The browsers reviewed, in order of their rating, are:

iCab
IE 5.2

I agree that Opera is really a good browser, but don't think it is as good as Firefox and Safari. On the other hand, I look the look and feel of Safari, and in my opinion it is the best browser, with the only caveat that a few web 2.0 do not work very well with it.

I still don't have a MacBook Pro (poor me..) but the first impressions are starting to arrive from people that received their laptops.

A blogger posts his experience with the new machine

I'm quite happy with it. Immediate impressions:

Much faster than my old PowerBook
Gorgeous screen
Awesome power connector
Runs hotter
Better sound
Nicer form factor (slightly thinner)

He also claims that some programs running under Rosetta in the new MacBook Pro are even faster than their native versions, what he attributes to poor optimization of the x86 code.

Anyway the MacBook Pro looks like an impressive machine.

Apple wins a large contract to supply laptops

Apple has recently won a big contract with the state of Maine to supply laptops for education purposes.

According to the contract, Apple will be supplying 36 thousand laptops in the next few years to professors, students, and others involved in the educational project of the state of Maine.

This is the second big contract won by Apple this year. The other contract also involved laptops. Apple has winning these contracts against other big suppliers such as Dell. This show the acceptance that Apple is having among educational institutions.

Running windows on the Apple Mac

Running Windows is not what most mac fans like to do (otherwise, they would move to the PC world), but it seems that there is some people considering the Apple just as a glorified hardware platform for running windows software.

Among the hackers determined to run windows on Apple Macs, some have had good success. In the picture, Windows Media Center is shown in a brand new iMac Intel. A new competitor for Apple Mac Mini

The Gizmodo blog reports on the announcement of a new competitor for Apple's Mac Mini computer. The small computer is called the Tango Cocktail CK-5201 Mini PC.

What this computer has is a Intel Core Duo T20300 processor at the clock speed of 1.66 Gz. And, more important for the home user, it has a nice design, shown in the picture above.

For mac fans, however, the big problem with the Tango Cocktail is really that is doesn't run Apple's Mac OS X. In fact, this can only be good if you are satisfied with the uggly Microsoft Media Center. Another downside: the video card is not the best for heavy game playing.

Fake iPod ad

Is Apple becomming the next SONY?

With the introduction of the iPod Hi-Fi on Tuesday, Apple has started to clearly follow a path that would not been thought possible for the company a few years ago: they are starting to introduce consumer electronic products that appeal to users more because of the "Apple" brand than anything else.

As a byproduct of the huge success of iPod in the market, Apple is nowadays viewed not only as a computer company, but as designer of beautiful and useful products (with a bend for musical technologies). This is clearly very different from the view held about the company during the 80s and 90s.

During the 80s, Apple was perceived just as one of the pioneers of personal computers. In fact, some Apple followers bought Macs because they liked the feeling of being using machines from the pioneers of the personal computing industry. Remember, for example, that was in the 80s that Apple released the first mass produced computer with a graphical interface.

For a good part of the 90s, on the other hand, Apple was viewed as a decadent company, living only of the small number of fanatic followers that bought their products. This was in some sense correct, because the company loose touch of the larger computer market, and instead continued to strive only for niches such as sound editing, graphical design, and related areas.

Now, after the iPod, Apple is viewed not only as a computer company, but also as a household brand for good engineered and designed products. And by doing this, Apple is repeating in USA what other companies from Asia, especially SONY, have been able to do: use the simple appearance of its logo to convey the idea of high technology and design.

The release of the iPod Wi-Fi, represents therefore the recognition that Apple can be much more than a computer company. They can leverage the brand to launch a high range of consumer electronic products, which, if successful, will attract the same crowds that bought iPods in the beginning of the 2000s. Let us see if this really proves the right way for the company to do during the next few years. My only desire on all this is that Apple be successful, but don't forget their origins as makers of good computers.

The Mac Mini is in some senses the most inovative product launched by Apple in the last year: it is a complete computer, with all technology (hardware and software) that Apple is used to provide, but in a very compact case that you can take everywhere. With such cryptic announcements, wide speculation has grown in the major mac web sites. Most people believe that new computers with the Intel processor will be released. However, it is not discarded the possibility that a new iPod, this time with a bigger screen, will be presented by Steve Jobs.

It is a game of secrecy that Apple plays with the media and aficionados every couple of months. We hope that this time again the waiting is justified with very "cool products".

Viruses threatening Mac OS

One of the big advantages of Macs compared to Windows has the resilience of Mac OS X. Based on the UNIX underpinnings, Mac OS X is an industrial strength UNIX that has been tailored for the desktop by Apple. The fact that Mac OS X is based on the Darwin kernel has made it much more secure than Windows.

During the last few years, while Windows users have been plagued by a constant assault of viruses, spyware, trojan horses, and other malware, Apple's Mac OS X has appeared immune to this type of problem.

This perception has changed, however, after two possible threats to Mac OS X have been found on less than one week. The problems, based on the way simple files are handled by the operating system, have been demonstrated to be possible to explore in order to compromise the system's security.

While this may look frightening, remember that the security flaws have just been shown as "concepts" and not real virus. Even if a real virus or worm is created for Mac OS X, it is very difficult that it will have the same consequences as on a Windows system. Most files on a Mac are protected against damage using file permissions. So, although the problems revealed this week show that Macs are not invulnerable, there is still a long way to go for virus creators if they want to make a life out of Apple computers.

PowerBook is retired from Apple store

The PowerBooks are one if the most beloved laptops of all time. I myself have one and am very proud of the little machine. This week, however, their became something of the past.

According to Macworld the PowerBook of 15-inch has been removed from the Apple online store. Apple is now only accepting orders for the new Intel-based MacBook, which is supposed to be finally delivered this month.

Apple unveils the new 1MB iPod

It is not from today that people is considering the question: will Apple sell a version of the iPod with a smaller memory? Will this new version be introduced at the expense of the iPod shuffle?

Well, both questions have been answered today. The answer is: yes Apple is adding a new model to the iPod family, the 1MB iPod nano for just $149.

The idea of the 1MB iPod nano is easy to understand - people love the design of the iPod nano, but many still feel that it is too pricey for the small amount of memory, compared to its larger brother iPod video (if you can call the iPod video big, anyway...).

But this new version will not kill the iPod shuffle, in fact it will make it more attractive. The new versions of the iPod shuffle are now priced at $69 (500 MB) and $100 (1GB). Thus, Apple in one stroke makes it even harder for other companies to compete in terms of features (iPod nano) and price (both iPod nano and shuffle).

I don't see how closer Apple can get to total domination of the music player market. If it was already difficult to compete with the original prices, now it will be hard to justify anyone to buy any music player that is not from Apple. Another smart move that will certainly reflect in the selling of iPods for the next few months.

Blog software on Mac OS X: Ecto

Continuing with my coverage of blogging software for Mac OS X, which started with a post about MarsEdit and iBlog, let us talk a little bit about what I think is a better software for blogging on Macs: Ecto.

Ecto is made by Adriaan Tijsseling, a programmer who is author of other nice software for Mac OS X. The basic system allows the addition of multiple user accounts, in case you have more than one blog. Blogs can also be maintained in several systems, such as blogger, wordpress, and typepad. Each account can be customized to ping any service such as weblogs.com, and blo.gs.

In the main window, Ecto presents a list of blogs: when you click a blog, the most recent posts are downloaded and presented in a list on the right side of the window. Then, you can either edit an existing post by double clicking it, or you can add a new post if you wish.

The post editor can show a rich edit interface or a more basic HTML interface. I use the rich edit interface since it is very easy to use, with most of the common formating options. The post editor also gives full access to a system of Tags (or categories, if you use wordpress, for example). When you add a new tag to the post, Ecto automatically creates the necessary code necessary to link to technorati.

Ecto makes it easy to add pictures for your posts, in the case you use blogs with the wordpress interface -- this may be a problem for people like me, who use blogger. To solve this I need to access the post one more time in blogger to add the images I want. Ecto also has some advanced options, such as changing the time of the post, adding pictures from iPhoto, musics from iTunes, and wish lists from Amazon.com.

In the end, Ecto appears to be still a young product but already with a very good set of features. Certainly it needs to incorporate a more features, which would be necessary to provide a full solution for bloggers (like, for example, support for image uploads to blogger.com). However, I see Ecto already as a pretty nice piece of software, that should be at least tried by bloggers using Mac OS X - after all, it is only 17.95, and you get 21 days with the trial version.

How to boot Windows XP in the Apple MacBook Pro

Since Apple announced the availability of the switch to the Intel platform in the last year, the possibility of using the Windows operating system in a mac computer has been suggested. It is no surprise, therefore, that some people have created lists of instructions to install windows XP in your mac computer.

The newsmart blog has a list of instructions to install Windows XP in the macBook. To do this, however, you need a PC computer with a clean windows installation and the programs Acronis Disk Director Bootable CD and Acronis True Image (to tweak the partitions).

The main problem faced in this process is the fact that the Macs don't use a BIOS as PCs do. Thus, while loading itself Windows cannot rely on the existence of the BIOS, what makes things a little more complicated. This is the list of instructions:

Using the Bootable Acronis Disk Director CD on the MacBook, shrink the Mac partition. Create a new partition of type NTFS/HPFS in the remaining space.
Setup a clean version of XP on a PC.
Extract Boot.7z to the root drive of your XP installation.. So you have C:\Boot\
Copy bcdedit.exe to the root drive of your XP installation. C:\BCDedit.exe
Copy MacBook.bcd to the root drive of your XP installation
Use sysprep to “reseal” your XP install and remove all hardware info from the setup (thanks Kristan for pointing that out!).
Use Acronis TrueImage CD to make an image of your XP install.
Use the bootable Acronis True Image CD to recreate the image on the partition you just made on your MacBook.
Use the Bootable Vista DVD to boot on the MacBook.
Select “Repair Startup” -> Next -> CMD -> Run too.
Browse to drive C:\Boot (which is the partition you created on the MacBook and then extracted the Acronis TrueImage file to). (cd C:\boot)
Run “fixntfs.exe -lh” without the quotes
Browse back to drive C:\ (cd \)
Run “bcdedit.exe /import MacBook.bcd” without the quotes
Eject the CD and restart.
In Mac now, hack the Darwin Bootloader to add another entry that chainloads Drive(0) Partition(2).
Restart

Apple code is really flawed?

A security researcher said in a recent interview that the operating system code of Mac OS X has lots of ancients bugs that should had been fixed ten years ago.

The specialist, Neil Archibald, was the same person that found the "dsidentity" bug last year. According to him, Apple is slow to patch bugs discovered by security researchers and they don't have a proper procedure for handling this problem.

My opinion that, while this guy gives good advice, he seems to be very resentful towards Apple. Even though there may be problems, it is difficult to believe that the Mac OS X is less secure than Windows.

Moreover, Mac OS X has more market share in the desktop than Linux. With so many smart people working with the Apple OS it doesn't seem that lack of users is the only reason Mac OS X is not attacked.

Finally, it is good to remember that Darwin is open source. If somebody wants to fix a bug in it, he or she just need to send a patch against the current source. Apple will certainly apply the patches that they consider necessary. So, again it is difficult to see how those old codes would be hiding on the Darwin code.

Logic Pro 7 for Intel processor

Thus, it is not a surprise that Apple announced this week the near release of a native version of Logic Pro for the Intel processor. According to Apple, the release is schedule for early February.

Is Disney buying Steve Jobs' Pixar?

Unconfirmed news have appeared in some web blogs saying that Disney would be buying Pixar from Steve Jobs for $7 billion dollars. Steve Jobs would continue as the main executive of Pixar, and would become one of the largest shareholders of Disney.

There is no confirmation but these sites say that tomorrow (Monday) there will be an official announcement. An interesting comment about the purposes of the buy out from applexnet:

Like NeXT (one of Steve Jobs's projects) was bought by Apple, and its technology incorporated into the company to revamp its product line, Pixar (again a project of Steve Jobs's) may very well save Disney. Where are the iPod killers?

Apple matters published an interesting article explaining why the supposed "iPod killers" are not killing the iPod, and how this could be really done.

First, they notice that the iPod look-alike players have none of the integration that the Apple product has. iTunes, and the large amount of accessories for the iPod are really an important strength for the Apple player.

They also draw attention to the interview given byt Steve Jobs we mentioned previously, where he says that only Microsoft would be able to launch a player capable of competing with the iPod.

On the other hand, they reason that this could be just a bait for MS. The reason is that their partners do not want to compete with Microsoft itself, and in this scenario they would be much more inclined to support Apple.

Microsoft and the Halo Effect

The halo effect is working not only for Apple, but for other companies that do software and hardware related to Apple computers. According to Technology News, one of the beneficiaries of the Halo effect was Microsoft itself.

Being one of the main producers of commercial software for the Mac platform, Microsoft also cashed in with the increase in shipments of the Mac during 2005.

It is ironic, but the new increase in sales of Macs indicate an increase of sales for Microsoft office. This is the advantage of being a diversified company...

Apple and WINE, more concrete signs

As I commented at the beginning of this year, one of the great possibilities for Apple, now that Intel processors are part of Apple computer, is the use of WINE as an emulation technology.

Now, it seems that the prediction is being confirmed. The guys from AppleInsider have some clues leading to the conclusion that "WINE to be released with Mac OS X 10.5".

This news is just part of what looks very natural for Apple: use the large amount of open source code that has been created for the WINE and integrate it into the Mac OS. They have done this for the Darwin kernel and for the Safari browser, so it is not hard to see this happening again with WINE.

I believe that this will be a great step for Mac OS X, as Apple help customers to make the change to the Mac platform.

iPod phone is finally near?

The idea of an iPod phone have for a long time been circulating on the Internet web sites. The basic premise is that it would be easy for Apple to combine the iPod with a cell phone, and that would be a killer gadget.

The rumors are back, now that Apple has registered a couple of trademarks related to the concept "mobile me". According to ZDNet, one possibility is for Apple to enter with a deal with larger carriers to become a reseller of cellular connectivity. This would be similar to what other companies, such as ESPN, are already doing.

Maybe, now that cellular phones are much easier to offer in agreement with other companies, it may be the right time for Apple to test the concept of an iPod phone. iPod fans would certainly be happy.

The Apple Mac gift from Windows Vista

An article by The Inquirer talks about the possible increase in the Apple share of PCs during 2006 due to the new Windows Vista.

Although critical to Apple, the article goes on saying that the main advantage of Apple is that they have now hardware that is basically the same of PCs, thus with the possibility of running PC programs with emulation. This will give users a new option between Macs and the new expensive machines that will be required to run Windows Vista. Apple may gain adoption because Windows Vista will also be expensive to upgrade.

In their own words:

A lot of people are going to realize they are going to hang onto their hardware for four to five years, so they might be willing to shell out a little more cash up front and buy the better looking Mac-intelatosh. After all, the two boxes use the same chips, cost about the same, and their operating system looks about the same. And, oh, by the way, the Mac-intelatosh can run Windows software in emulation. Of course, they'll be gobs of people who are sticking to pure WinTel, including the hardware builders and the extreme gamers, but they're a small percentage of the vast majority of home buyers.

Jobs predics Microsoft will launch a MP3 player

This is very interesting: during an interview to Newsweek, Steve Jobs predicts that Microsoft will be forced to release its own MP3 player, probably this year. Would that be the nemesis of the iPod -- predicted by its own creator?

The problem is, the PC model doesn't work in the consumer electronics industry, where you've got all these companies and some does one thing and another does another thing. It just doesn't work. What's going to happen is that Microsoft is going to have to get into the hardware business of making MP3 players. This year. X-player, or whatever.

Apple trademark on the Hi-Fi iPod

The AppleInsider describes a new trademark application by Apple. The request term "iPod Hi-Fi" suggests that the company is developing some kind of hardware or software to provide Hi-Fi support for the iPod player.

This idea is now new, and several people have commented on rumors that Apple would be creating a wireless version of the iPod. However, if the news is true, this is the first sign that Apple is really creating some kind of remote access device that has iPod-like capabilities.

In a separate news, the AppleInsider speculates about the possible announcement of iPods with larger screens:

Separately, sources said that Apple is developing an iPod model with a higher-resolution display and about an inch of additional viewing area. It's unclear if, or when, the company intends to release the device, and no further details were provided.

One of the interesting things about owning an Apple computer is that it can become more than a simple new device. Apple, through its design and software, presents a new digital lifestyle, which is very addicting for several people.

The saukvalley.com runs an article about the impact of Apple in the lifestyle of their customers. Some of them, self titled "apple fannatics", go as far as having Apple tatoos, and "planning their vacations around the MacWorld conference" in San Francisco.

The article describes how the cult of Apple is growing, with the larger number of people have access to Apple gadgets such as the iPod.

Granted, Apple continues to hold a paltry 4 to 6 percent of the personal computer market. But the iPod dominates in the MP3 category, with 83 percent of the market share, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said during his keynote address Tuesday. Apple has sold more than 42 million iPods; last year alone, 32 million flew off store shelves. And in the three most recent months, consumers snatched up 14 million iPods. "That's over 100 a minute, 24/7," Jobs said. "It still wasn't enough."

Microsoft discontinues Media Player for Mac OS

Microsoft announced this week, according to MercuryNews.com that it will stop developing Windows media player.

This is an interesting move since it means that Apple will have less competition in its own OS to define the future media formats and applications.

It also means that Mac OS users will have less support for proprietary formats that Microsoft may release in the future. So, the announcement may represent a problem for mac users, if Microsoft introduces innovative technologies that will be availabe only in its OS.

Just to complement the previous post, another software you can use to create blogs in the Apple platform is iBlog Product Page, from Lifli Software.

The difference from this program to MarsEdit, however, is that it does not interface with blogger systems, such as blogger and moveable type. Instead, it can be used to manage itself the blog.

In this sense, iBlog is similar to iWeb, recently released by Apple, since iWeb can generate its own blogs that are upload to the .iMac account.

MarsEdit: editing your blog on an Apple Mac

Creating blogs with the blogger interface is easy and fun. You just need to create you blog with two simple steps, and add posts using an intuitive web interface.

However, at times you may fee more comfortable using a software created for your own operating systems, instead of using the browser to add posts. For example, you may want the freedom to define fonts, how to save the draft posts, and the general look and feel of the editor.

In this post I would like to review the MarsEdit editor for Mac OS, which offers some of the facilities described above.

MarsEditor is a product of Ranchero Software, a company that specializes on writting software for the web in the Mac OS platform. They are also the writers of the NetNewsWire news reader.

The MarsEditor is mainly composed of a panel where you can check the contents of your blog and start the edit actions. The program knows about most types of blog systems, including of course blogger.com. Other popular types of blogs supported are: moveable type, typepad, wordpress.

MarsEditor has a left panel that provides easy access to all your blogs. This makes it easier to visualize your content, since your previous posts can be displayed in the main window. This is especially nice if you have blogs in different systems, such as moveable type and blogger. Then, you can use the same interface to control them.

The post editor provides several commands for easy formatting. You can add new posts or edit previous ones with the same easy. And, as in all other mac os programs, you can use the native spell checker to avoid language-related mistakes.

The only problem I saw while using MarsEditor was the lack of support for images in blogger. I don't know if this is a configuration problem, but I couldn't add pictures to the server.

All in all, MarsEdit is a very nice package to handle your blog-editing tasks in MacOS. It has a 30 days free trial, so I think it is a good program to check in order to save time and post more frequently in your blog.

Apple keyboard from Microsoft, but no Apple key

Among other companies, Microsoft is also trying to make a few bucks from the success of Apple in the computer market. In the last Consumer Electronics Miscrosoft released a new keyboard for the Mac plataform.

The only catch with the keyboard is that you cannot get the Apply simple in the "command" key. The reason is that Apple does not license the use of the symbol to Microsoft. "Apple controls the licensing, It's their trademark."

Apple iLife and iWork have new versions

Not only the hardware area of Apple presented surprises yesterday: the sofware inside the Macs has also become a little better.

Apple presented new software products that make collaboration and use of multimedia much easier that ever before. The iLife line of products has been updated. This time, the iPhoto software gained many new features to simplify working with pictures, effects, and retouchs. Garage band is able to record podcasts directly, and send them to other applications.

The main change in the package has been the addition of iWeb, a very easy to use web page design software. It integrates seamlessly with the other programs in iLife, and can also be used to upload information directly to the .iMac account. iWeb can be used to create blogs, static pages, and dinamic pages as well.

These improvements were rounded out by the announcement of the new iWork, with new versions of Pages and Keynote.

Apple is rewarded for product innovation

An article by CNN describes how the industry and the media view the influence of Apple in computing technology.

They describe how Apple, which is not the company with the highest market share in the PC market, is able to create products of high innovation and design. This makes each announcement of Apple to be of high importance for the rest of the industry.

Apple, without doubt, is again in the path of delievering some of the best computers even seen. The recently launched iMac is an example. The MacBook that was previewed yesterday is another example.

According to the article:

At last week's Consumer Electronics Show, a dozen PC makers announced support for the Intel Corporation's new dual-core Intel microprocessor, saying they would deliver Core Duo computers to consumers in the spring. Apple, which didn't start working with Intel until last spring, will beat them all to market with Core Duo-based iMac computers, which started shipping to stores as Jobs was speaking yesterday.

As a reward, the shares of Apple are again up for more than 3% in the last two days.

iPod gets a new FM tuner

Well, afterwall the MacWorld didn't bring any shaking innovation to the iPod world, only the certainty that the current geneation of iPod products is really ground breaking.

There are, however, some goodies for iPod fans that are worth notice. First, Radio Remove, the new iPod FM tuner, is a nice addition to the list of great iPod accessories. It is sleaky, and very well designed. Different from the normal accessories for the iPod, the FM tuner attachs diretly to the phones, leaving the iPod free of an extra accessory - in a sense, it works an extension of the phone chord.

Radio remote works as a good remote controler for the iPod. Changing music, sound volumes, or radio stations is much easier to do with the scroll interface, similar to the one in the iPod shuffle.

The Radio Remote also has a nice interface that can be accessed directly from the iPod. It would be great if other products could use a similar trick -- although this is difficult to replicate since only Apple at this point can directly program the iPod.

In a quick note, Daniel Terdiman posted to the News.com the incredible fact that, in the day of the introduction of the first Intel-based mac, the share price closed at $80.86.

... t's pretty unlikely that Wall Street was able to manipulate Apple's share price, given the thousands upon thousands of people who no doubt bought and sold the stock Tuesday. But it's little coincidences like this that make technies and geeks sit up and take notice. Or at least I and the friend who pointed this out to me did.

Apple makes splash with its best Laptop ever

The Macworld expo had today its greatest event in Steve Jobs' keynote. Among several other announcement, Jobs presented what is certainly the most powerful laptop Apple has even created.

The new laptop, which is also the first Mac laptop using an Intel process, has a dual core processing unit which has almost four time as much processing capacity as the Power PC G4 that are used by the current generation of power books.

The MacBook, as the new laptop is called, has also more innovations, such as embedded iSight camera (with the double of the definition of current iSight models), and a larger and brighter screen. All this enclosed in a metal case that is only one inch thick.

According to the Scottsman:

COMPUTER giant Apple last night unveiled a "revolutionary" new laptop computer which it says is four to five times faster than its predecessor.
The MacBook Pro is just one inch thick and weighs 5.6lb. Its increased speed is down to a new Intel chip, the first time Apple has used Intel processors. The chip will be rolled out to all new Mac machines this year.

Apple iMac is first Intel-based computer

The iMac is the first Apple computer with and Intel processor, as just announced by Steve Jobs at the Macworld expo, in San Francisco.

Apple and the CES

Even not being officially part of CES, Apple got a lot of attention by other companies presenting their new productos on the expo.

According to CNET News.com, this attention is comming mostly from competitors, such as Microsoft and Google, which are concerned with the increased marked conquered by Apple in the last years.

Microsoft, for example, announced a iTunes like software that will be available latter this year, in cooperation with MTV. The new service will be available with the new Windows Vista operating system.

Google, is also trying to get its share from Apple market, using the Google video website. The objective is to sell video for Internet customers, something that the iTunes video store has been done since last year.

Finally, there are also the companies that are offering accessories for the iPod other Apple products. These companies also represent an important part of the announcements that have been made during the CES expo. All this shows that Apple is now an important part of the consumer electronics world, even when it is not physically present.

Apple set to launch Intel-inside laptop

The MacWorld expo is only tomorrow, but today people are already very excited with the possibility that Apple you launch a new Intel-based computer.

Apple announced last year that 2006 would be the year of a shift to the Intel processors, after many years using the IBM/motorolla Power PC architechture. The move will be great not only for Intel, but for several consumers that want more compatitibility between the Mac and PC platforms.

The use of Intel processer in Apple's computers may represent an easier task for software developers that need to port programs from the PC to Mac. For example, game development companies could benefit from this change.

Another great advantage will be for the Apple's mobile line of computers. It has been difficult for Apple to incorporate the newest versions of the G5 processors into its laptop line, due to engineering issues (mainly power dissipation problems). With the Intel processors, Apple will be free to inovate again in the area of laptops.

MS analyst previewing Apple's downfall

The espectacular rise of Apple in the last years, due particularly to the iPods, has set many people angry. I have no doubts the company in Redmond is one of the more tormented by the success of Apple: both the rising share price as well as the rising market share.

It is no surprise, therefore, that their analysts are fast to preview that Apple's stock is due to fall. With MS own stock stagnated at the same level since 2000, there is no reason for them to be happy with the iPod and Mac OS success.

The people that are saying that Apple's market share will decrease are the same that said that Apple would die. Nonetheless, it continues to be one of the most successfull and inovative companies. Let us see what these analysts say after Apple's new products are announced tomorrow.
